spffiatura-02The glass-blowing
The chance of glass-blowing for giving it the wished shape, has been; discovered at the end of the first century a.D. in the Middle East, in particular along the Phoenician Coast. The technique rapidly spread and it represented the most common method for container production until the XIXth Century. Using an iron pipe called " canna "(=pipe) with variable dimensions, the craftsman draws from the crucible stove ("padella"=frying-pan), the sufficient quantity of melted glass for mounding.(fig.1).As the material is in doughy state, the drawn portion looks like a rough drop called "bolo", "pera" or "paraison".
The "bolo"(=bole) is too much fluid as soon as it's taken off the "padella" and then it tends to collapse, so it's made cool by swinging on a metallic plate with the "canna" in horizontal position. This operation is for regularizing the "bolo"surface, and to turn it into a cylindrical shape. At this point the glass-blower puts the "canna" in vertical position and he starts blowing air into the "bolo"(fig.2), that gradually swells. It is a necessary process done several times to get the desired shape, warming up to the plasticity point only the object part that must be further or widened. The glass-blowing happens just after the "bolo" is introduced between the two hinged parts of a metallic blow-mould, so that the glass, swells into the internal walls assuming the shape.

The grinding
The coarse object comes from Murano and after it's been carefully cut, there are five phases of working:
molatura-01 molatura-02 molatura-03
Manufacture with emery-wheel grained 40 Emery-weel grained 80 Grindstone plus sandstone grained 120 (the object becomes opaque)
molatura-04 molatura-05 molatura-05
Cork-well plus pumice-stone
(the object is polished)
Cloth-weel plus cerium oxide
(the object becomes brilliant)
Preparation wheel
The engraving
The engraving is a technique that involves the use of the wheel scratching the glass with different pumice stones. To change the transparency of glass, changing the wheels and you get different effects. During the recording the wheel must be constantly bathed with water to reduce the cooling wheel and the friction between glass and cleaning up the porosity of the grinding wheel.
